Changing what we can is essential.
When we first come into the program, we’re usually frustrated and worn out—mainly because all our efforts to change other people have totally flopped.
We thought, “If only the drinker would stop drinking… if my boss would stop nagging… if the kids would just chill out—then I’d finally be happy.” But none of that happened.
And in that desperation, we found our way here, and funny enough, that’s when things slowly started to shift for the better.
One of the first powerful lessons we learn is this: we can’t change other people.
No matter how good our intentions are or how hard we push, beg, yell, guilt-trip, or bargain—it doesn’t work.
People only change when they decide to, not when we force it.
The second big lesson is we can change.
We can shift our expectations.
We can let go of trying to control everything and start trusting a Higher Power to guide us.
We can learn to take life one day at a time.
We can lighten up, breathe, and believe that there’s a bigger plan at work, and that, somehow, we’re going to be okay.
…
Today’s Affirmation:
There is a lot I can do today. I’ll begin by keeping my attention on my behavior and working on my relationship with God.

Today’s thought of the day is inspired by A Life of My Own by Karen Casey,— a small but powerful book full of daily reflections, meditations, and prayers, offering practical spiritual guidance for living a clean, sober, and more grounded life.
Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. With over 20 years of experience speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth, she has dedicated her life to helping others. Her own recovery journey began more than 30 years ago in Twelve-Step groups, and she’s deeply passionate about supporting others on the same path.
