A Thought for the Day

Leap Essence’s Thought for the Day is a daily meditation for those in recovery or dealing with addiction to alcohol or drugs.

*May 30*

Addiction is a misunderstood disease.

Not everyone gets that addiction; whether it’s to alcohol or drugs, is actually a disease.

Honestly, before joining a Twelve Step program, a lot of us didn’t get it either. We used to take it all so personally.

The lies, the arguments, the drinking—it hurt, and sometimes it made us furious. We’d ask things like, “Why didn’t you just stop after one drink?”

over and over, hoping something would click. But nothing ever changed. Now we know why. Addiction doesn’t work like that. It’s not about willpower or morals—it’s an illness.

And once we start to understand that, we often want everyone else to get it too.

We want people to stop judging the ones we love and see the truth. But here’s the thing: we can’t make people see it our way.

That’s where the First Step comes in. It reminds us that we’re powerless over others—their choices, their beliefs, their actions. What we can do is focus on ourselves.

We can grow. We can heal. And we can share what we’ve learned with others, knowing that even if they don’t get it yet, we’re doing our part.

Today’s Affirmation:

I may not be able to change how others see the addict in my life, but I can share what I’ve learned—that addiction is a disease, not a moral failure—and use that understanding to help educate others today.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Today’s thought of the day is inspired by A Life of My Own by Karen Casey,— a small but powerful book full of daily reflections, meditations, and prayers, offering practical spiritual guidance for living a clean, sober, and more grounded life.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. With over 20 years of experience speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth, she has dedicated her life to helping others. Her own recovery journey began more than 30 years ago in Twelve-Step groups, and she’s deeply passionate about supporting others on the same path.
