*May 4*

The road to peace and sanity is available to us.

The first time we walked into a Twelve Step meeting, we had no idea how a group of regular people could possibly fix the mess in our lives.

We tried everything we could think of, but nothing seemed to work.

Our partners, spouses, and friends were still drinking, the kids were out of control, and we felt completely hopeless—sometimes even desperate enough to consider suicide.

How could these people help us? We wondered.

Luckily, we stuck around, and little by little, something started to change.

It’s hard to put into words how the practice, and the process works, but it does.

For one, we no longer feel alone.

Knowing others have been through the same struggles and come out the other side, is comforting.

We also learned about a loving Higher Power, which was a huge shift for many of us, especially since the God we grew up with felt judgmental.

The Fourth and Fifth Steps have helped us understand our actions, and how we can take full responsibility for the chaos we’ve caused.

The biggest thing we’ve learned is that every day is a new chance to live in line with the values of this path; and even if we messed up yesterday, today is a fresh start to be the person we want to be.

Today’s Affirmation:

I won’t feel fearful, angry, or out of control today if I live according to the principles of this path.

A Life of My Own

A Life Of My Own

Today’s thought of the day is inspired by A Life of My Own by Karen Casey,— a small but powerful book full of daily reflections, meditations, and prayers, offering practical spiritual guidance for living a clean, sober, and more grounded life.

Karen Casey is also the author of Each Day a New Beginning. With over 20 years of experience speaking on spirituality, relationships, and personal growth, she has dedicated her life to helping others. Her own recovery journey began more than 30 years ago in Twelve-Step groups, and she’s deeply passionate about supporting others on the same path.
